Secured by Design Welcomes Bureau Veritas for IoT Testing

Cyber security testing and certification body, Bureau Veritas, has joined Secured by Design as a new Secure Connected Devices (SCD) IoT testing house.

The SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation recognises products that have met robust cybersecurity standards, demonstrating that manufacturers have taken clear steps to reduce vulnerability to cyberattacks and protect users and their data. Trusted independent third-party certification plays a vital role in verifying these standards have been met, and helps manufacturers comply and meet current regulations, such as the UK’s Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 (PSTI).

One of the recognised certification frameworks accepted by SCD is ETSI EN 303 645, the European baseline standard for consumer IoT security. The standard is widely used to demonstrate compliance with the UK’s PSTI Act and applies to a broad range of consumer products such as wearables, smart cameras, smart doorbells, lighting, thermostats, and household appliances.

For SBD members, Bureau Veritas provides an additional testing route for IoT products seeking Secure Connected Device accreditation and compliance with ESTI EN 303 645 covering key areas such as:

• Secure software updates
• Security of interfaces and data communications
• Vulnerability disclosures procedures and patch management
• Product logging
• Protection of personal data
• Validation of data inputs

Bureau Veritas Cybersecurity assesses products against these requirements through technical testing alongside a review of supporting documentation and processes, including security architecture, test reports and user guides, before issuing a formal compliance report.
